| |
The Festival du cinéma international en
Abitibi-Témiscamingue sprang from the dream and audacity of
three ardent cinema lovers – Jacques Matte, Louis
Dallaire and Guy Parent – and its growing success has
never stopped to amaze. |
|

|
| |
In 1977, the threesome organized the first
Semaine du cinéma regional; in 1981, they held the Semaine du
cinéma québécois en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and in 1982, the
first edition of the Festival du cinéma international en
Abitibi-Témiscamingue. |
|

|
|
| |
The event takes place from the last Saturday of
October to the following Thursday, in Rouyn-Noranda, the
regional capital city of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, a region
situated some 600 kilometers northwest of Montreal. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
During six days the Festival features a
selection of more than 150 short-, medium- and full-length films
from some thirty countries however with a predilection for
Quebécois cinematographic works. Every year brings its share of
world and North American premieres. Known for its receptive,
open-minded audiences, the Festival du cinéma international en
Abitibi-Témiscamingue is very often a fine occasion to test or
crack the North American market. |

Striving to diversify its cinematographic offer
and audience, the Festival has developed many activities
adjoining to the regular program schedule. Some of them are
intended for younger audiences, children and school groups,
others for adults 18 to 30 years of age. Also the Festival tours
the other main cities of the region. |

| |
The Festival ranks among the most innovative
initiatives ever experienced in Abitibi-Témiscamingue and has
proven very rewarding on many aspects – culture, economy,
geography, tourism and society. The Festival generates some
$2,000,000 in spin-offs in the region.
True to its objectives, the Festival still has an international
dimension while being the mirror of a region that provides a
great environment to live and boasts a warm and enthusiast
population. |

Over the years, the Festival du cinema
international de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue has built itself a
reputation as a highly pleasant event. In 2001, it was
recognized by the Répertoire des festivals de cinéma
international as the friendliest festival on the planet. It has
attracted big names of the filmmaking industry like
Claude Lelouch, Serge Gainsbourg, Marie Trintignant, Maria de
Medeiros, Jean-Claude Lauzon, Pierre Falardeau, Denys Arcand,
Roy Dupuis, to name just a few. Since 1982, it has welcomed
nearly 4,500 guests from all over the world – film directors,
actors, producers, distributors and journalists. |

A wonderful springboard for filmmaking artisans
and a stimulating opportunity to make discoveries, this original
event brings together cinema lovers, journalists and filmmaking
artisans in an atmosphere conducive to memorable encounters. |

The Festival knew how to distance itself and breathe a wind of dynamism into the region, proving that it is possible to set up big cultural events even if we live far from big city centers as Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver. |

schedule, the participation of notorious guests, the warmth of
the population of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, the excellence in media
coverage, the loyalty of a fervent audience, the professionalism
of the organizing team and the uniqueness of the environment,
the Festival has gained recognition from the press and the
filmmaking industry. |

The Festival’s three founders were awarded the Prix du Citoyen 2009 by the Chamber of commerce of Rouyn-Noranda.
