We’re delighted to present the North American premiere of the feature film Les rayons gamma, directed by Henry Bernadet and co-produced by Vuk Stojanovic and La Coop Vidéo de Montréal. The film is distributed by Les films Opale. Les Rayons gamma is a comedy-drama filmed with young people from Montreal’s St-Michel district.
Henry Bernadet’s debut feature (À l’ouest de Pluton) was selected in over 80 festivals worldwide and is considered by critics and film buffs alike to be a landmark of Canadian independent cinema. Understandably, we’re very excited to present his second feature film.
Synopsis:
There’s Abdel, whose quiet life is turned upside down by the arrival of his extroverted cousin, whom he takes in for the summer; Fatima, who longs for a more stable existence, trying to get away from her bad company; Toussaint, who, on a fishing trip, finds a bottle washed up with a message inside. Then there’s Naïma, Maya, Ayoub, and the others. There’s a remote-controlled car, a pastel castle lining the freeway, electric cicadas, a monolith, and powerful rays.
Avant que les flammes ne s’éteignent is a French drama directed by Mehdi Fikri, produced by Topshot Films and The Films, distributed by Bac Films. The film was hailed as an astounding feautre film following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. This fictional film is strangely in tune with current events in France, following the riots in the wake of the death of Nahel Merzouk, the 17-year-old Franco-Algerian who was shot at point-blank range by a police officer during a traffic stop in France on June 23, 2023. Avant que les flammes ne s’éteint is a gripping drama about an Arab family’s struggle to uncover the truth behind the suspicious death of their younger brother, and how they must overturn the police code of silence and the justice system in France to do so. Here, fiction and current events about racism and police brutality merge. The performance of actress Camélia Jordana, the sister at the centre of this struggle, is extraordinary. This is a deeply moving story, a film not to be missed.
