We are delighted to welcome Kim Thúy (novel Em, 2020), a Quebec writer of Vietnamese nationality who is well known to the Quebec public and has won several prestigious literary awards for her novel Ru, as well as Charles-Olivier Michaud, who directed the big-screen adaptation of the book, currently translated into some 15 languages. Ru is the story of young Vietnamese Tinh and her family, who are accepted as refugees in Canada, arriving in Granby after a dangerous sea crossing and a stay in a camp in Malaysia. This is where they begin their new life. For Tinh, adapting has its share of difficulties. Shy and reserved by nature, she has to learn a new language and integrate into her new environment. Haunted by the hardships of her journey, Tinh will have to dig deep within herself for the resilience she needs to survive and thrive. The feature will be released in cinemas at the end of November. Charles-Olivier is also known for his work on several TV series, including Boomerang, M’entends-tu? and Prémonitions.

On va aux vues

The On va aux vues tour of seniors’ residences in Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d’Or continues to be a Festival staple this year. The mobile activity enables a greater number of senior filmgoers to enjoy the Festival from the comfort of their own homes. This year, seniors will have the pleasure of viewing several short films: À même le sol, directed by Jade Astoux, Lucie Dupeyrat, Chirag Paul, Marine Sauvageot, and Nathan Ygouf; Chat mort, presented on opening night, a black comedy by Annie-Claude Caron and Danick Audet; Le temps des orages, by Témiscabitibian Gabrielle Gingras; and Fortissimo, a French film by Victor Cesca, who shares the lead with Amiel Tennenbaum.
